 Social Media Marketing Intern

We are looking for creative, driven, and engaged interns passionate about health and Africa to support our growing team. The ideal candidate is also curious and brings innovative and fresh ideas to the team. Our internships offer a great opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on experience in health journalism and digital media/publishing.

Position: Editorial Assistant Intern
Compensation: Unpaid/School credit
Location: Virtual/Remote
Commitment: 15-20 hours per week for at least 3 months (with flexible schedule)

Responsibilities

This intern will work directly with our founder and editor-in-chief. He/She will be largely responsible for creating and maintaining our editorial calendar, article research, producing and managing weekly newsletter, preparing articles in WordPress for publication, sourcing images, brainstorming/pitching story ideas and writing.

Requirements

  • A passion for healthy living, Africa and stringing words together
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program and pursuing a degree in Journalism, Communications (including Health Communication), English, or related major
  • Strong writer with good grammar and witty sense of humor
  • Experience with a content management system (WordPress, a plus)
  • Experience with Mailchimp & Photoshop, a plus
  • Prior experience in magazine or digital publishing, a plus
  • Regular access to e-mail, texts, and/or Skype
  • A resourceful self-starter with the ability to work well independently and as a contributing member of a team
  • Strong time-management and organization skill
  • Incredible attention to detail
  • Must provide your own laptop

 

For Social Media Internship:

Responsibilities

This intern will work with our social media manager, editor-in-chief and PR team. Some training will be provided for Instagram and Facebook marketing.

  • Brainstorm and contribute creative content ideas for weekly social media schedule
  • Identify trending social stories that are relevant to our audience
  • Assist with content creation (includes writing/copywriting), management and distribution across our platforms
  • Maintain social media editorial calendar
  • Ensure published articles are shared across our social media channels
  • Assist in creating and executing social media marketing campaigns
  • Generate weekly and monthly social media report
  • Assist in growing and nurturing our social media community including responding to users in real time in a tone consistent with our brand
  • Help develop and expand brand partnership outreach efforts
  • Research current trends and stay abreast of changes in the social media marketing space
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • A passion for health, Africa and all things social media
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program and pursuing a degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, PR, New Media, Business, or similar major
  • Extensive knowledge of major social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, YouTube (Bonus points for BBM channel)
  • Previous experience using social media management platforms for business a plus but not required
  • Experience using Google Docs, Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Iconosquare, Facebook insights, Facebook Power Editor and Google Analytics preferred
  • Strong writer with good grammar and witty sense of humor
  • A resourceful self-starter with the ability to work well independently and as a contributing member of a team
  • Strong time-management and organization skill
  • Incredible attention to detail
  • Regular access to e-mail, texts, and/or Skype
