8 key benefits of Vitamin C to your health

Ascorbic acid, commonly known as Vitamin C is a nutrient found in oranges, green and red peppers, vegetables, strawberries etc. It is a powerful antioxidant responsible for protecting the body from damage.

The amount of Vitamin C required by your body largely depends on your age. Growing infants usually require up to 50mg of Vitamin C, the amount goes down to 15mg for children up to age three. For adults, it climbs back up to 90mg for men and 75mg for women. However, what are key benefits of Vitamin C?

Blood pressure level

Large doses of vitamin C can lower blood pressure. It acts as a diuretic and allows the kidneys to remove more water and sodium from the body. Doing this ultimately relieves the pressure on the walls of the blood vessel. It also protects the body supply of nitric oxide, which is known to relax the blood vessels.

Healthy hair

Vitamin C is known to perform a variety of functions regarding hair.

  • It helps the hair to retain its natural colour, meaning less grey hair.
  • Low adrenal gland can lead to loss of hair, one of the primary ways of fighting low adrenal gland is by supplementing it with Vitamin C. This helps to reverse the process that causes hair loss.
  • Vitamin C helps to fight germs living in the scalp that cause dandruff.

Prevents multiple soreness

Vitamin C supplements before exercise can help reduce soreness of the body (muscles) as well as oxidative stress, preventing damage.

Wound healing

The body uses Vitamin C to help heal injuries on the skin. It contains collagen, which not only clots wounds, but also creates scar tissue that helps protect the site.

 Boosts immunity

Vitamin C helps to stimulate the immune system. It enhances the strength and protection of the body. It also reduces how severe allergies are and fights off infections. Research has also shown that vitamin C helps to reduce the duration and effect of common cold.

Protection from the sun

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. The body uses it to fight off harmful radicals, which are produced when radiation from the sun comes in contact with the body. A lack of Vitamin C naturally leaves the body with a reduced ability to fight them off.

 Healthy eyes

Vitamin C intake can reduce the risk of cataracts. When taken, it prevents age related macular degeneration and loss of visual acuity. The vitamin also helps to fight off radicals from causing molecular damage to the lens tissue in the eye.

 Helps with weight loss

Adequate oxidation of the body during exercise can be enhanced by intake of Vitamin C. It enhances metabolism, which naturally aids loss of weight.
